Direct seeding on natural landslides

Landslides are common in tropical and subtropical regions with high rainfall, causing huge ecological and socioeconomic impacts worldwide. Post landslide natural vegetation regeneration is usually slow, with demonstrated higher potential of leading to repeated disturbances. In order to boost post-disturbance forest recovery and succession stage from repeated disturbance risk, human-mediated restoration actions haves been increasingly suggested. However, a comprehensive study of effective landslide restoration strategies remains lacking, particularly associated with seed treatment methods and species selection. To evaluate the effectiveness of different seed coating techniques (i.e. control: sowing bare seeds; treatments: biochar-dominant or clay-dominant seed coat formulation), successional species groups (pioneer and late) and seed sizes on native seed germination, we have been conducting direct seeding experiments on landslides in Hong Kong since 2020.
