Study on Management of Recreational Fishing in Reservoirs in Hong Kong

Currently, 17 impounding reservoirs and 9 irrigation reservoirs are open for recreational fishing by citizens holding valid fishing licenses (the anglers) issued by the Water Supplies Department (WSD) from 1 September of each year to 31 March of the next year.  In 2021, the WSD implements a pilot scheme at Plover Cove Reservoir and the Tai Tam Group of (TT) Reservoirs (i.e., Tai Tam Upper Reservoir, Tai Tam Byewash Reservoir, Tai Tam Intermediate Reservoir and Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir) to uplift the closed fishing season from 1 April to 31 August 2021. This project aims to study and assess the potential impacts of the fishing activities to the reservoirs, such as the environment, water quality and freshwater fish biodiversity. We conduct field surveys on anglers’ fishing behaviors and baseline freshwater fish biodiversity study for the above reservoirs. Through this study, the feasibility of opening reservoirs to fishing activities all-year round will be evaluated and recommendations on possible improvements in regulating fishing to balance the potential human impacts and recreational values of the reservoirs will be identified.
