Study on urban biodiversity enhancement for Tung Chung New Town
Tung Chung New Town Extension (TCNTE) is one of the upcoming, large-scale developments that aims to provide sufficient land for residential, economic and social uses to cater for the increasing Hong Kong population. Sustainable Lantau Office of Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) has commenced the study “Urban Biodiversity Enhancement for Tung Chung New Town Extension (TCNTE) and Adjoining Areas” to formulate an Urban Biodiversity Master Plan (UBMP) that covers TCNTE, Tung Chung New Town and its adjoining habitats. We examine and evaluate the ecological values and potentials for all existing and newly planned urban landscape assets and adjoining natural habitats in the Study Area comprehensively via field surveys and literature review. In addition, short- and long-term landscape strategies and actions are proposed to build a functional ecological network for urban biodiversity and enhancing climate resilience in the Study Area. This study can be regarded as a demonstration project to set an exemplar for planning with considerations of urban biodiversity and sustainability for future new town developments in Hong Kong.
